So, I complain a lot about Florida weather (it's hotter than the sun, why do we inhabit this state) but there is something captivating about the way the heat seems to shimmer, and how summer gives way to bushes and trees laded with heavy flowers, fat and meandering bumblebees, and a general slow-ing down of life.

I'm reading "South and West" by Joan Didion for bookclub, and through her eyes I am perhaps seeing a more charming side of our toasty Florida swamplands. It's definitely worth a read, and a good primer to Didion if you've not read her before.
